It Starts With A Sketch:

A common question I’m often asked is how I create art on my iPad. How does it work? Where do I start?

Once I’ve got the kernel of an idea in mind, I make a very rough digital pencil sketch on my iPad. I often spend most of my time developing the idea through this sketch, reworking it until I’m happy with the result. This is the jumping-off point for the beginning of a painting.
